Background of the study
Facebook comment threads in Nigeria provide a dynamic arena for observing syntactic variation driven by digital communication. Users frequently deviate from conventional grammar in favor of innovative sentence constructions, shorthand expressions, and nonstandard punctuation. These variations are shaped by factors such as informality, rapid response dynamics, and the desire to convey emotion succinctly (Okeke, 2023). The study examines how these syntactic variations emerge within comment threads, reflecting broader cultural and generational influences. Nigerian speakers often blend elements of indigenous syntax with standard English, resulting in hybrid forms that challenge traditional grammatical norms.
